October Monthly Report

Dear 5th-grade families,
Here is a recap of the things we did in October and a look ahead to what we will be doing in November:

Math: Students have been studying about decimals and the value of each digit in the base-10 place value system. They have finished 2 unit tests to date through our new online platform, Reveal Math. In November, we will be estimating sums and differences of decimals and later on multiplying and dividing whole numbers with up to 4 digits. Homework will be assigned 2-3 times per week as they progress through the unit. Please continue to encourage your child to practice their multiplication facts and to make estimates to check whether their answers are correct. These skills are essential in order to do more difficult calculations as your child advances through Grade 5 and into middle school.

Literacy: Students are continuing to use their reading journals to track their reading in various ways while in the classroom and at home by finding interesting words and deciphering the meaning of idioms within the text. Our reading focus has been determining themes and describing how a narrator's point of view influences the story, especially in the first person. In November, we will be looking at Apostrophes, quotation marks and how to use numbers in writing. We will be continuing to discuss the themes in our class read aloud, 'Hatchet' by Gary Paulsen and we will be taking a look at stories written in with different POVs.

Science: Students have completed hands-on investigations that have to do with the phenomena of matter and its interactions in our everyday life—mixtures, solutions, solubility, concentration, and chemical reactions. Students have been keeping detailed notes in their science journals and will be using these notes for unit tests and performance assessments. In November, we will continue to discover experiences with mixtures, solutions of different concentrations, and also engage in engineering experiences with separation of materials. We will also be experiencing a variety of ways to represent models to explain objects, events, or systems that cannot be observed directly.

Social Studies: With Mr. D, Students have been studying the Aztecs and have come to the end of their diorama projects. In November, students will be studying Kings and Queens and modern-day monarchies.

Bible: Students have been continuing to discover the ways in which God shows Himself through Creation, design in nature, and in people’s consciences through worksheets, discussions, and small group activities. We have been reflecting on Biblical hope, which is based on God’s unchanging character and promises. In November, students will discuss the concept of Biblical love and learn about God's faithfulness to keep His promises from several stories in the Old Testament including the story of Joshua and Caleb.
SEL: Students have been focusing on learning how to show God’s love to all people, especially when it feels most difficult. We have been focusing on how our actions can be perceived by others and how we can make sure our actions show God's love. In November, students will continue a unit entitled "You First”. Students will focus on having the same attitude that Christ Jesus had when we read about him in the New Testament.
Writing: Students have learned the techniques for editing and raising the level of narrative writing. They have worked their way through the writing process to write their own personal narratives and submitted them through Google Docs. In November, Students will work on inanimate object narrative short stories and begin working on Research-based argumentative writing.
Makerspace: Students have been working on exploring and developing an idea for a hands-on Makerspace project. Students have been introduced to the basics of 3D design with TinkerCAD and robotics with LittleBits. In November, students will be narrowing in on an idea for their individual Makerspace project and will be researching ways to implement their projects.
